Il ne faut pas chercher bien loin pour trouver le premier point fort du Player HD. Le constructeur en avait parlé, cela s'est vérifié. L'écran offre une qualité d'image étonnante, exploitant la technologie Amoled. L'image est lumineuse et très contrastée; la finesse des caractères, remarquable au premier coup d'œil. Et bien qu'il s'agisse d'un écran tactile sur lequel on laisse des traces de doigts, l'intensité du rétroéclairage fait que celles-ci passe inaperçues, sauf quand l'écran est en veille.
Ecran
L’écran Amoled 3,7 pouces QHD du Samsung Player HD vient occuper la coque du mobile comme un diamant sa monture : tout l’ensemble tourne autour de lui et s’y ajuste. Sublimant les images, cet écran tactile est également agréable à utiliser grâce à une réactivité exemplaire. Piloter les menus, saisir du texte (SMS, e-mail, etc.), composer un numéro: tout se passe très bien en effleurant la dalle. Le son n'a pas grand-chose à envier à l'image. Pour un téléphone mobile, la puissance est très correcte. On regarde ses DivX ou Xvid sur un écran de 9,5 cm de diagonale avec un son convaincant.
Avec cet écran majestueux de presque 10cm de diagonale, la taille de l’appareil est plutôt importante mais bien proportionnée.
La coque du Samsung Player HD est loin d’être vide avec un mobile quadri-bande (GPRS/EDGE/HSPDA), connectivité Bluetooth, Wifi b/g, DLNA (HD sans fil), USB et jack audio/vidéo. Il embarque également une presque traditionnelle puce GPS. Le capteur optique est un 8MP, la mémoire interne de 8Go (extensible micro-SD).

Doté d'un capteur de 8 millions de pixels, mode vidéo embrayé, il est possible de pousser la résolution à 1280x720 pixels. Un mode vidéo connu sous l'appellation HD Ready. Dans les faits, il faut bien le reconnaître, si l'endroit est bien éclairé, la qualité des résultats est très honorable.
En intérieur, les essais dans un restaurant baignant dans la lumière laissent apparaître un léger voile opaque. L'image est un peu fade, certes, mais elle reste de bien meilleure qualité que ce que l'on connaît sur les autres téléphones. Pas de problème quant à la mise au point, même sur les changements de plans rapides. Et la qualité d'image est encore meilleure en extérieur. En revanche du côté du son, c'est beaucoup moins bon. Les voix sont nasillardes en raison d'un son globalement étouffé.
Le Player HD s'en sort également assez bien en mode photo. Là encore, ce photophone se place un cran au-dessus de nombreux appareils du marché. Le Player HD dispose également d'un mode de prise de vue en rafale. En fait, une pression prolongée sur le bouton de déclenchement de l'appareil permet d'enregistrer jusqu'à 10 clichés en 640x480 pixels.
Aussi étonnant que ce soit, le résultat est tout à fait convenable tant qu'il n'est pas question de prendre en rafale une voiture qui passe très vite devant vous. La mise au point reste correcte tant que vous ne bougez pas l'appareil mais que c'est le sujet qui bouge dans votre champ de vision.
Interface-Logiciels
Le Samsung Player HD repose sur le Symbian S60 v5, avec la complète logithèque libre correspondante. Nativement, de bons logiciels sont fournis : traduction Collins, conversions, bureautique (démo) et Adobe, les chargements sont alors assez rapides pour que cela se remarque. Petit logiciel de reconnaissance de cartes de visites qui marche bien sur des cartes formatées !
Le logiciel de navigation GPS n’est pas satisfaisant, on aura recours à des logiciels non-installés.
La navigation internet est parfois étrangement lente et le CSS mal interprété.
Le « tiroir à widgets » Touchwizz de Samsung tire parti de la taille de l’écran pour devenir pratique : l’appel de fonctions est simplifié. Les modes de saisie (3 au choix : clavier alphanumérique, clavier AZERTY paysage ou écriture manuscrite) bénéficient aussi de ce grand écran. Saisie confortable qui met en péril l’envie de condenser ses SMS ou mails ! Petite vibration très agréable en confirmation des actions, certains doubles clics agaçants : cela s’équilibre.Parmi les fonctions logicielles, on compte également le geotagging de photos, ou l’envoi de vidéos…
Mission Wi-Fi
En revanche, la connexion Wi-Fi de ce téléphone ne fonctionne pas ou en tout cas très mal. S'il est question de se connecter à un réseau sécurisé par clé WPA, le Player HD voit la connexion mais refuse de l'utiliser pour se servir des services en ligne. Pas mieux pour les réseaux protégés par clé WEP 64 ou 128 bits.
Dernière tentative sur un réseau Wi-Fi non protégé, le résultat n'est guerre plus concluant. Le Player HD indique que l'appareil est connecté mais, lorsqu'il est question de consulter une page Internet, il indique que la connexion n'est pas possible. Un défaut, en tout cas sur notre modèle de test, qui ne nous a pas permis de tester ses fonctions de streaming vidéo, censé être compatible DLNA. Dommage!
Appareil en main, pas de problème pour tout ce qui concerne la partie téléphonie. L'écouteur et le micro sont de qualité, on entend et on se fait entendre sans aucun problème. Rien à signaler non plus quant à la connexion Bluetooth.
